Advocating for the increased representation of Latinas, Latinos, and Latinxs in the judiciary is central to the EBLRLA’s mission.
The EBLRLA is excited by the increased opportunities for experienced Latinx lawyers to join the federal and state bench and continues its advocacy on judicial appointments, in collaboration with other Bay Area La Raza Lawyers chapters and our statewide coalition.
This 2021, we welcomed two EBLRLA-endorsed judicial candidates to the bench: Judge Elena Condes and Judge David Pereda. Justice Victor Rodríguez—formerly an Alameda County Superior Court judge and also endorsed by the EBLRLA—was appointed to serve as Associate Justice of the Court of Appeal for the First Appellate District.
In August 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed then-Commissioner and now Judge Pelayo Llamas Jr. to serve in an interim appointment as a Judge in the Alameda County Superior Court which allowed him to immediately assume the position which he was otherwise elected to begin in January 2023.
In October 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom announced his appointment of two of our EBLRLA members to the Alameda County Superior Court bench: Commissioner Ruben Sundeen and Verónica A. Ríos Reddick.
