The EBLRLA - IRC Supports the Oakland City Identification Card Coalition (OCICC)!
In 1986, the Oakland City Council established a sanctuary ordinance, declaring the city a sanctuary for people seeking asylum from political persecution in their homeland. In April 2007, Oakland affirmed itself as a “City of Refuge” for all who immigrate — whether to escape political persecution or because of dire economic necessity.
On March 5, 2008, Centro Legal de la Raza hosted the initial convening to discuss establishing an Oakland City Identification Card — following similar innovations in New Haven, CT and San Francisco, CA (led by ALDI — la Alianza Latinoaméricana por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes).
Since then OCICC (the Oakland City ID Card Coalition) has been meeting regularly, obtaining endorsements for the program from an array of community organizations and individuals, and meeting with local elected officials to determine how to legislate and implement an Oakland City ID Card program.
